Oral health is whole body health

Your mouth is home to trillions of microorganisms known as the oral microbiome. When balanced, it supports immune function, gut health, and keeps inflammation in check.

When this balance is disrupted, known as oral dysbiosis, chronic low grade inflammation and harmful bacteria can affect the entire body.

Poor oral health has been linked to cardiovascular disease, diabetes and metabolic syndrome, obesity, Alzheimer’s, autoimmune conditions, digestive disorders, certain cancers, fertility and adverse pregnancy outcomes.

An imbalance in the oral microbiome (oral dysbiosis) can cause inflammation by allowing harmful bacteria to overgrow and trigger immune responses. These bacteria release toxins such as lipopolysaccharides (LPS), which can strongly activate the immune system. In response, the body produces pro-inflammatory cytokines that damage local gum tissues. If this process continues unchecked, these inflammatory signals and bacterial toxins can enter the bloodstream and contribute to ongoing, low-grade inflammation throughout the body.

High sugar intake, smoking, tobacco use, chronic stress, nutritional deficiencies, and poor oral care or products can all disrupt the oral microbiome.
